Hawaiian Monk Seals

The Hawaiian Monk Seal (Monachus schauinslandi) is ʻIlio-holo-i-ka-uaua in Hawaiian and means “dog that runs in rough water”. These much-loved pinnipeds are among the most at-risk in the world, and despite being listed under the Endangered Species Act in 1976, are still near the brink of extinction. Over the last 50 years, the Hawaiian monk seal population declined by more than 60%, and at fewer than 1100, is at its lowest level in recorded history.
