Sunray Zoanthid Anemones

These intriguing little anemones are found only occasionally on shaded reef in shallow water. We found them originally on the North Shore of Oahu. They are generally brown with tiny lines radiating from the mouth at the centre, and with short tentacles displaying hints of iridescent green. These only grow to about 1″ in diameter. Such beautiful creatures! We were mesmerised by the fine details as we squinted in the dark recesses we found them in. These are relatively unusual anemones in that they grow on an individual stalk, unlike most that attach directly to the reef. Read more in our blog post.
