    About Nudibranchs (Sea slugs)

Nudibranchs are marine gastropods (snails and slugs) that have lost their shell to evolution; indeed, the name 'nudi' refers to their naked gills. They belong to the order Nudibranchia, and are much loved by scuba divers around the world. Many scuba divers and underwater photographers visually 'collect' them - finding a 'new to me' species is a kind of thrill only nudi lovers really understand!

Found in a rainbow of colors, shapes and sizes, these soft-bodied ocean gems are found  worldwide and often feed on sponges, anemones, and other invertebrates.

    Samla bicolor

A nudibranch from the Samlidae family. Body is translucent bluish-white with opaque white on the cephalic tentacles, rhinophores and cerata.  The cerata have partial or complete bright orange bands, hence its common name. Some individuals in deeper water have white patches. Found on Big Island, Maui, Oahu, Niihau, Laysan, Midway and Kure, and more widely in the Indopacific region. Cerata have subapical orange band.  Oral tentacles have flattened tips.  Attains 1/2 inch.
