Aloha! I’m Shera and while you may know that I design and make the jewelry at ‘Alohi Kai you may not know I’m also the underwater photographer.
The animals I carve are inspired by my underwater experiences around the world and in Hawaii, but capturing the movement of a wild shark in a carving is greatly aided by good images – and not just one! Close ups of their heads, tails and fins from different angles are important. Watching and understanding how a shark or dolphin moves helps when designing but carving something in motion is so much easier when you have images to study.
As the daughter of two college photographers who fell in love, and a dear grandfather who supported his family with a photography studio, I’ve been taking photos most of my life. But after starting *underwater* photography over 20 years ago with a little point and shoot, that was the edge of a deep black hole – more cameras, more lenses, more strobes! So in response to a number of requests, I’m adding a few of underwater photos to the shop. These are all taken by me, and will rotate as time permits. (If you have a favorite creature let me know and I’ll see if I can add some.)
