Bull Sharks
Bull sharks, also known as Zambizi sharks, are unusual in that they can adapt to both fresh and saltwater. While their usual habitat is the ocean and especially in the mouths of estuaries, they can also be found in coastal bays, rivers, lakes and even ponds! They’ve been found 2,400 miles up the Amazon River, as well as in Lake Nicaragua, and even the Mississippi River. Unlike many sharks, bulls can swim in both shallow and deep water, which makes them even more suited to changing between rivers and oceans.
The bull shark is one of the largest requiem sharks, reaching up to 11 ft long. They give birth in freshwater or in shallow saltwater to live pups that are just under a meter long. Young bulls remain there for about 5 years, when they venture out into the ocean. Sadly they are threatened as bycatch as well as being intentionally fished for their fins, liver oil and skin, and their population is decreasing. They are currently listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN Redlist.
