Hawaiian Monk Seals

The Hawaiian Monk Seal (Monachus schauinslandi) is ʻIlio-holo-i-ka-uaua in Hawaiian and means “dog that runs in rough water”. These much-loved pinnipeds are one of the most endangered in the world, and despite being listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act in 1976, are still near the brink of extinction. Over the last 50 years, the Hawaiian monk seal population declined by more than 60%, and at fewer than 1100, is at its lowest level in recorded history.
