For centuries humans have had a fascination with merfolk – mermaids and mermen. They appear in the folklore of cultures around the world, including Europe, Asia, and Africa. Selkies, Mami Wata, Kappas, Sirens, Oceanids, Naiads and mermaids are all different names for merfolk in different cultures. There are also more scientific explanations of mermaid sightings, noting that manatees and dugongs are marine mammals with flippers that could resemble arms from a distance. But these days, we think of mermaids/merfolk simply as people who love the water, and feel as home in it as on land.
