Hīhīmanu – Spotted Eagle Rays

Spotted eaglerays are often seen swiftly gliding through the water in Hawaii. They have 2-6 venomous spines at the base of their tails, and while described as solo beings, in Hawaii we used to see them in groups >20 at a time. Often found feeding on sandy bottom shellfish, they search in the sand with their beak-like snout, sometimes pushing against their tail burrowed in the sand. Hihimanu have distinctive white spotted dark brown/black backs, and attain 8ft (w/o tail) Status: near threatened
