In some cultures skulls are a discussion on immortality, in others, bravery and strength. Sometimes it’s a symbol of the underworld, and nowadays often rebellion. For many ancient cultures, it demonstrated a reverence for ancestors. And even in Elizabethan times, jewelers used skull designs as rings. And these days fashion skulls are found everywhere.
But this is not any of that. This is specifically a King penguin skull. An enduring remnant of a magnificent bird, the second largest penguin alive today. For us, this is about a reverence for the ocean, the cycle of nature, and the beauty of life in all stages. This is not about fear or intimidation, it’s about celebration of life and dark ocean beauty. This is essence – bones. Wear it as a totem of the ocean, or to give you courage and bravery. And remember the ocean when you do.
These stunning penguins are the second largest penguin, similar in look but smaller than the largest emperor penguin. With crisp, clean lines, and beautifully colored heads and necks, they are very recognizable to people. Often standing very vertical, their bright orange and yellow heads are set off by the black, grey and white of their bodies. They mainly eat fish, squid, and krill, and repeatedly dive to over 100 metres (300 ft) to get them! Sometimes even deeper. King penguins are mainly found in subantarctic islands and the north antarctic.
