Mushroom coral are an unusual kind of coral in that most types never attach to the reef.  At night rather than the colony of thousands of polyps found in most corals, a single polyp will emerge from it. This particular type of mushroom coral is uncommon on reefs in hawaii, and only attains 1.5″ in maturity.
