About Oceanic Blacktips
Oceanic Blacktip sharks are powerful, graceful creatures. They thrive around the world, including in Hawaii. On South Africa’s Kwazulu Natal coast we were fortunate to dive with over 25 of them at a time, such a memorable experience. These are wonderfully sleek and extremely fast sharks that can leap out of the water and spin three to four times – averaging speeds of 6.3 m/s (21 ft/s)! Fully grown, a typical Oceanic Blacktip is around 5 ft, but they can grow up to 9ft long. While not on the endangered species list, these sharks are considered near-threatened. Find out more.
